I am evaluating a trial copy of DataGraph.  It is impressive.  I especially like the flexibility in data management and overall usability to modify output. One thing I have not found is whether I can move the data range values assigned to an axis further away from the axis if I wanted to. I can change the spacing of the overall axis label, which spaces it further away from, or closer to, the axis, which is nice; but wondered if there was a way to do the same with the actual tick mark values?  Thank you.

        Hi Brian!

In the Style settings, there is a Box style option. If you set this to ‘Offset axis’ you can move the entire axis.

        Example offset

        Is that what you mean?

No.  In your bar graph, for example, can you move the A, B, C…G further away from the tick marks/plot axis. Thanks.

There is not a specific setting for this distance, but there are a couple of ways you could do this depending on the look you are trying to achieve.

First, for a categorical axis (like the bars) you can add \n in the name to force a line break.

            Move Line for Labels

If you had to do this for a lot of rows, set up a Text expression column and use that in the command.

            Move Line for Labels2

To get a finer level of control, here is what you can do…

1 – Hide the default x-axis (uncheck Draw x-axis on the right side of the Axis settings).

2 – Add two Extra Axis commands from the command menu.

3 – Set the Position for both to ‘Bottom’.

4 – Set the Drawing style for the first to ‘Only ticks’ and the second to ‘Only labels’.

Then you can use the sider to adjust the location of the labels.

            Move Line for Labels4

I would recommend placing both commands in a group.  Then you can more easily copy and paste the group to other graphs or drag & drop the group to other thumbnails.

We are curious how much space you are looking for, is adding one line enough or do you really want a finer level of control?

Interesting.  This helps, but can you do it for a series of numbers where the graph only portrays certain intervals (i.e., numbers) for the ticks?

How much space?  One or two spaces would probably suffice. I had a publisher once require I do this because they shrunk the graph in my MS for the final publication and wanted separation for the reader between values and axis when it was reduced in size.  When it was shrunk down it became difficult to read and see both the numbers and ticks.  Since then I have been sensitive to that potential need.
