Is it possible to create a graph using points (linked) as y and a text column as x (as is possible with a bar graph? Or is there a way to use points in a bar graph rather than bars?

        Malcolm,

I think you might be talking about a Cleveland dot plot. If so, I make these all of the time and it is quite easy.

Step 1. Create a scatterplot. Use the # column as the y-values.
Step 2. Change the “Y tick marks” field to ‘Categories’.
Step 3. Change Labels for the “Y tick marks” to the text field you wish to plot.

Here is a sample dot plot made with Datagraph.

Here is what the annotated dgraph application screen looks like to accomplish this.

        I hope this helps…

Also, you can do the reverse with categories on the x-axis, as I reread your request after posting and saw that is what you asked for…

Thanks David –   Also nice looking graphs on your web page 🙂

In case text columns are not ordered properly with the row number, there is also a built-in option to map text column entries to numeric values.  Then those text columns can be used anywhere number columns work.

For example, say you have a text column and a number column.  If you selected these two columns and clicked the points command you get this … where the menu entry for x is red as this is not a number column type.

            points1

In the column list, set an option to map these text values to a number.  This can be sequential or sorted. In this case, the values are assigned based on the alphabetical sorted order.

            points2

To show the text values as the x-label entries you can use the Axis settings.

Thought I would also “point out” this file in the examples that makes a histogram with points.

            points

            Hope this helps!
