I was cleaning up a file I posted during our webinar today, adding some titles etc., and started questioning a dot plot I made …. can you see the problem here?

      Dot Plot2

It showed Alzheimers’s as the leading cause of death.  This did not sound right to me as I was pretty certain heart disease should be near the top.

Sure enough looking at the data confirmed the graph was labeled incorrectly. It was showing the order in the table not the rank that I was using the y location in my Points command.

      data

To fix this, I set the y-label Locations to the ‘Rank’ column in the Axis settings.

      location

This corrects the graph showing heart disease as the leading cause of death in 2017.

      Dot Plot

Sorry for the snafu.  So important to always check our graphs to make sure they make sense!  Dot plots can be made using the rank column property (Add an Expression column and enter ‘name.rank’ to return the order for a number column, in this case ‘Value.rank’) but the labels must also be properly assigned.  You can also use sorted data but in this case my data was not sorted.

FYI – I also changed the area graph to order with Heart disease on the top.  I think this is a better representation of the data as the largest magnitude reduction in death rate is in heart disease.

      Area

      Have a great weekend!
