      Hey

I have the following issue when I open some Datagraph files and then try to close them again.

The document “XXX” could not be autosaved. The file has been changed by another application.

It occurs when I change something in the file, but don’t want to save the change. I just want to close the file a sit originally was. When  get this message, I cannot close the file or quit out of datagraph. It forces me to either save the changes or use Save As and save a new copy. I am not sure what “another application” is as I obviously only open the file in Datagraph.

I am using Mac OS 10.15.6.

      Thanks

I have seen this too… it seems to happen if you do a “Save as” rather then just a save or duplicate. It also seems like it occurs if you move the file while it is open. I think macOS handles those gracefully, but Datagraph not so much. I have found that if you want to reuse the same file as a starting point, the user template feature is the best way to go.

Just to confirm …. Is this the message you are seeing?

Yes, that is correct. Typically I have opened the file to play around with it (change variables to see etc), but I don’t want to save it. If I click revert, it revers back to how it was when I open it, but then I can’t just close the file, as I keep getting the above message.

DataGraph uses the Auto Save and Versioning features in the macOS.  The AutoSave has a lot of benefits but it means that anytime a change is made, a version of file is saved.   You simply can’t open a file without the change being registered.  Here is a link to article I liked, that describes this feature (maybe in more detail that you are interested in!):

AUTO SAVE AND VERSIONS: AN OFTEN OVERLOOKED MAC FEATURE

The message you are seeing is generated from the macOS and is not something that DataGraph has control over.  But it can occur in two ways we are aware of, either due to a synching protocol from something like dropbox, where they save a file in the DataGraph package, or in the instance that you are having, where you revert back to a prior version.

To save the file back to the version from when you opened:

1 – Select Revert the first time

2 – Then select Save Anyway when it pops up again

To have more control over what version you revert back to you can try using the Revert menu.

              Autosave copy

After reverting to a prior version, the system will still pop-up this message.  Click ‘Save Anyway’ to continue.   In this case, this message is something we need to check into further, to see if we can indicate to the system that the file is OK to save, but you do not have to make a new version of the file.
