Custom Legend Variable

The icon plotted on the custom legend when using the ‘variable’ option is always just a square of color. Ideally it would be nice to be able to chose the shape of the colour icon to match the symbol used plot the data.  Is it possible to change this so that the ‘add variable’ option in the custom legend also allows you to chose what shape of color icon you want displayed in the legend itself?

I also have the same question. I can add another variable to include the marker shape for different groups but with 30+ categories in my legend already that adds another half dozen items to the list so becomes unwieldy. Plus one has to visually combine for themselves the marker shape and color. Any workarounds for this issue, the only examples use very simple graphs, not monsters like mine.
